A new nutrition education platform, the Female Football Nutrition Network (FFNN), has launched a dedicated app aimed at helping female footballers optimise their performance through science-backed nutritional guidance. Founded by Aimee Ellen O’Keeffe, former Performance Nutritionist for Manchester United Women, the FFNN app has gained support from professional players, including Kirsty Hanson, Martha Harris, and Millie Turner, who have praised the initiative as vital for female athletes.
Since launching an Instagram page over the summer, FFNN has attracted a following of over 1,300 users even before the app’s official release, with O’Keeffe and her team sharing nutrition advice tailored to the demands of women’s football. O’Keeffe, who has seen the impact of specialised nutrition support firsthand, hopes the new platform will give more female athletes access to the tools and education they need. “We’re thrilled to have pro players backing what we’re doing. It’s all about giving girls and women the chance to fuel themselves properly for the game they love,” said O’Keeffe.
O’Keeffe’s experience working with elite footballers is evident in FFNN’s tailored approach. Kirsty Hanson, Aston Villa and Scotland midfielder, highlighted the difference O’Keeffe’s nutrition guidance made in her career. “Aimee is one of the best nutritionists around – she gave me tips and recipes to help me fuel in the best way possible so I could perform at my best,” she said.
Birmingham City’s Martha Harris, a former England international, echoed Hanson’s praise. Harris worked with O’Keeffe during her time at Manchester United and saw a direct impact on her performance. “Having that relationship with food and understanding its importance in my training really improved my game,” Harris noted, adding that O’Keeffe remains her go-to nutritionist years later. “It’s great that others can now benefit from her expertise through this app.”
Manchester United’s Millie Turner, also an England Lioness, shared her experiences of struggling to maintain a steady weight during the playing season and credited O’Keeffe for helping her establish effective fuelling routines. “Now I feel more confident in what I need to perform at my best,” said Turner.
FFNN is also backed by Dr James Morehen, England Men’s Performance Nutritionist for the Rugby Football Union, and Evan Bailey, Birmingham City FC’s Lead Academy Nutritionist. Together, the FFNN team brings extensive experience in performance nutrition across professional sports, including their work with England’s football and rugby teams.
The platform offers a comprehensive range of resources, including webinars, pre-match and post-game nutritional advice, recipes, and 1-1 consultations. Members can join live sessions with guest speakers and access practical insights designed to empower them on and off the pitch.
“Nutrition is essential for enhancing both individual and team performance. With the FFNN, athletes can make informed choices and establish healthy habits that support them throughout the season,” said O’Keeffe.
The FFNN app, officially launching on Monday, is set to become a go-to resource for female footballers across all levels, from grassroots to elite players. Designed to foster a community of empowered athletes, the FFNN hopes to reshape the way female players understand and approach nutrition, giving them the knowledge they need to fuel their careers with confidence.
