The GSMA has launched the first industry-wide Responsible AI (RAI) Maturity Roadmap to guide telecommunications companies in their ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence. The roadmap aims to provide mobile network operators (MNOs) with the necessary tools and frameworks to test, assess, and improve their AI practices.
The telecoms industry is increasingly relying on AI technology, with global consultancy McKinsey estimating that the expanded use of AI in the sector could generate up to $680 billion in value over the next 15 to 20 years. The GSMA’s roadmap is intended to ensure that as this technology is adopted, it is implemented responsibly and in line with ethical standards.
This is the first time an entire sector has united under a common framework for AI use, marking a significant commitment by the telecoms industry. The roadmap was developed with input from McKinsey and leading operators, allowing telecoms companies to assess their current maturity levels in terms of AI usage and measure progress towards responsible AI integration.
The initiative builds on the commitments many MNOs have already made to use AI in ethical ways. By offering a structured approach, the roadmap provides clarity on how operators can align their AI strategies with global regulatory and ethical standards. These standards include guidelines from international bodies such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The roadmap has received backing from major industry players, with Axiata, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, and Telstra leading the charge. A total of 19 MNOs have already committed to using the roadmap to track and improve their responsible AI practices.
Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA, underscored the importance of transparency in AI adoption. He said: “The transformative potential of AI has long been apparent, but its integration into our work and our lives must be done in a responsible and transparent way for it to be truly effective and sustainable. Responsible AI is the right way to explore and unlock the many opportunities the technology presents, and the telecoms industry is proud to lead the way as the first sector to commit to this approach. We hope others will follow our example.”
The roadmap offers a pathway for MNOs to evaluate where they currently stand in their use of AI and provides clear guidance on how to improve. It also includes tools for measuring progress, giving companies the confidence to fully commit to responsible AI adoption.
By standardising ethical AI practices across the industry, the GSMA hopes to unlock the full potential of the technology more rapidly. The roadmap is expected to help MNOs navigate the complex regulatory environment surrounding AI and create greater value for businesses and consumers alike.
The GSMA’s efforts have been lauded for setting a benchmark that other sectors may follow, ensuring AI adoption across industries is both ethical and effective in the long term. The full roadmap is now available to operators who are ready to assess their AI capabilities and enhance them through responsible practices.
