A recent study commissioned by E.ON has revealed that over three-quarters (76%) of British workers believe flexible working positively impacts their overall wellbeing. The research, conducted as part of National Work Life Week, found that two-thirds (66%) of respondents feel they maintain a strong work-life balance. However, it also highlighted areas for improvement, with a quarter (25%) of those surveyed indicating they do not enjoy this balance.
Significantly, more than half (52%) of respondents stated they would only consider employment with companies that offer flexible working as standard from day one. This insight reflects a growing trend among workers seeking greater flexibility in their roles. E.ON aims to lead by example, setting standards for flexible working practices in the industry.
At E.ON, over 50% of employees already benefit from informal flexible working arrangements, such as adjustable start times and compressed hours. Moreover, 87% of E.ON staff reported satisfaction with their current working arrangements, demonstrating the company’s commitment to promoting employee wellbeing.
Sarah Farmer, Director of Organisational Development & Engagement at E.ON UK, expressed concern that a significant portion of the workforce still lacks adequate flexibility. “While it’s encouraging to see that many individuals have access to the flexibility they need, it’s troubling that a quarter of people are not achieving a strong work-life balance,” she said. Farmer emphasised that flexible working is open to all employees, not just parents or caregivers, from their first day of employment.
Jane van Zyl, CEO at Working Families, echoed these sentiments, asserting that flexible working has become a necessity rather than a perk. “This research from E.ON highlights a growing expectation from employees across the UK,” she stated. “More than half of working people now consider it a requirement when choosing a new employer. Flexibility not only improves wellbeing but also helps individuals manage their work and home responsibilities more effectively.”
E.ON’s flexible working principles, introduced in 2022, aim to provide employees with greater choice and autonomy in balancing their professional and personal lives. All job vacancies at E.ON are advertised as flexible, and employees can request flexible arrangements from their first day of work.
In addition to its flexible working policies, E.ON provides equal parental leave for all employees, regardless of gender or biological relationship to the child. This initiative ensures that all parents have the opportunity to support their growing families. E.ON also offers various family-friendly benefits, including paid leave for fertility, neonatal care, and pregnancy loss.
The company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion has earned it recognition, having been named one of the Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers for seven consecutive years. Currently, E.ON ranks eighth on the list and was recently awarded Best Company to Work For in the Women in Utilities Awards.
E.ON continues to advocate for flexible working practices that benefit both employees and the organisation as a whole, striving to create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Find out more about E.ON’s commitment to diversity and inclusion at eonenergy.com/inclusion
